Why Feeling Seen Helps LGBTQ Youth Feel Safe

In this presentation, GLAAD explores and highlights the research and the reality of what the LGBTQ community (particularly LGBTQ youth) is facing today, the importance of seeing ourselves represented in media and how brands can drive the change we need.

This session will explain the expectations of and the opportunities for brands to participate and accelerate acceptance, including:

  • Where is the LGBTQ community feeling safe? And where are they feeling unsafe?

  • What values and expectations do youth have of brands to advocate and to accelerate acceptance for the LGBTQ community?

  • What is the impact of LGBTQ people seeing themselves represented in the media?

  • What are some barriers that brands are facing when it comes to including LGBTQ people in advertising? What is the impact and the success to be had, if brands do it right?

  • How does GLAAD’s work drive acceptance, and how we/the GLAAD Media Institute can be a resource to brands and agencies in their efforts to be more engaged and inclusive.
